Frequently asked questions
Yes. If you have already had your PMB approved or if you meet the criteria for a PMB then I will apply on your behalf and submit all subsequent invoices directly to medical aid so that you will not need to pay anything. Please note that the PMB is not a guarantee and if you have not been approved previously then I will need to assess whether you meet the criteria.
A full psycho-educational assessment is tailored to each learner, taking into account the specific concerns raised by both the parents and the child. While the assessment process differs according to individual needs, it typically includes a comprehensive evaluation of cognitive functioning, academic skills related to reading, writing, and mathematics, as well as emotional functioning, psycho-motor development, and attention (particularly where symptoms of ADHD may be present).
I will initially meet with both parents for an intake session to discuss your presenting concerns, prior to the assessment. The assessment itself is usually conducted over one or two mornings, depending on the age of the child. Following the assessment, I compile a detailed report, which is typically completed within 2-3 weeks, after which a feedback session is arranged to discuss
the findings and recommendations of the report.
A psycho-educational assessment helps to develop a deeper understanding of how your child learns, processes information, manages emotions, and functions within both the school and home environment. Parents often seek an assessment when they notice that their child may be struggling academically, emotionally, socially, behaviourally, or with attention and concentration.
An assessment can help identify underlying factors that may be contributing to these challenges, such as learning difficulties, attention difficulties (including ADHD), anxiety, emotional stress, executive functioning difficulties, or specific barriers to learning. It may also highlight your child’s strengths, learning style, and areas of potential that can be supported and developed further.
Experiencing ongoing difficulties with reading, writing, spelling, or mathematics
• Struggling to concentrate, remain organised, or complete tasks independently
• Showing signs of anxiety, low self-esteem, emotional distress, or school avoidance
• Underperforming academically despite effort and support
• Presenting with behavioural, social, or emotional difficulties
• Being considered for assessment accommodations or additional support at school
• Transitioning into a new school phase and requiring guidance regarding support needs
• Demonstrating strengths or giftedness that may require enrichment or specialised support
The goal of a psycho-educational assessment is not to “label” a child, but rather to gain meaningful insight into their unique profile in order to provide practical recommendations and support strategies for both home and school. This collaborative process helps parents, teachers, and professionals better understand how to support the child in reaching their full potential academically, emotionally, and socially.
